Landscape Photography

This can be taken as a stand-alone experience for clients who have some photographic knowledge and are just looking for locations or for clients who have attended the Basic Camera Techniques and wish to extend and practice their skills. This would make an excellent gift for a keen photographer looking for something a bit different.

The landscape in Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata and the surrounding areas is so inspiring and diverse and in this experience we can visit stunning locations further afield than San José. Such locations may include Desierto de Tabernas, home and host to a great many spaghetti western films, Rodalquilar and the abandoned mining village, Isleta del Moro and may even go as far as Granada, or indeed anywhere within Andalucía.

Having worked with a number of clients we have identified a number of short routes that make the best of the natural light. Please note that some of the times may be adjusted to suit seasonal variations. This year in order to make our offering more environmentally focused, we will carry out as much of our operations as possible by foot, i.e. to meet / park at a designated public place and walk to the locations.

These routes are as follows:

Rutas de Oro / Routes of Gold (approx. 4 hours)
This route is perfect for those who like to photograph locations where the has been evidence of human intervention in the natural landscape, e.g. ruined buildings, abandoned villages.

ruta-minas

We will meet in the centre of Rodalquilar and walk back to see the biggest of the areas “ghost towns”. Here you will have the opportunity of photographing the derelict and ram-shackled buildings and creating some stunning effects with the morning / evening light. From here we will walk through the centre of Rodalquilar and up to the abandoned gold mine and explore the area. Click here for my blog post relating to this. Although this experience can be had during the morning or the afternoon, we would recommend a morning visit as this presents the best light in which to view and photograph the former gold mine.

The cost of this route based on a group of four is €30 per person, for a couple the price is €55 per person. We are happy to take individuals but you must appreciate then the price has to increase accordingly.

There are a number of good tapas bars and restaurants in Rodalquilar where you can relax after your experience, subject to them being open of course! This however is NOT included as part of the experience.

IMPORTANT:
Complimentary transport to / from San José to these locations can be provided as a courtesy but it does NOT form part of the experience and as so, wouldn’t be covered by our normal insurances. By accepting our offer of complimentary transport, you are accepting liability for ALL risks during transportation.

Ruta de Cabo de Gata / Route of Cabo de Gata (approx. 4 hours)
This route takes us to some beautiful natural locations along and near to the stretch of coastline that is commonly known as Cabo de Gata or Playa de San Miguel.

ruta-cdg

We will meet close to the lighthouse or Faro de Cabo de Gata, from here we can walk to the seemingly lesser-known but stunningly beautiful Cala Arena. The similarities to the Giants Causeway in Ireland and Fingal’s Cave in Scotland are due to the same geological processes, i.e in short, the rapid cooling of lava to form columns of basalt. We will then follow either the footpath or if conditions allow, the beaches and visit the small coves between Cala Arena and what is the defining feature of the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata, the Arrecife de las Sirenas. We recommend taking this experience so that we arrive at Arrecife de las Sirenas for sunset. There is perhaps no better place in Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata for watching a sunset and here you will have the opportunity of photography something truly fantastic!

The cost of this route based on a group of four is €30 per person, for a couple the price is €55 per person. We are happy to take individuals but you must appreciate then the price has to increase accordingly.

OPTIONAL EXTRA:
Not far from the Arrecife de las Sirenas and well worth a quick visit is the recently renovated Iglesia de San Miguel, a local symbol of the area, the salt works and former dwellings of the salt factory employees (some deserted and some now turned into holiday apartments). Here you will have the option to photograph a number of areas of ethnological importance under the late afternoon sun. Also worth seeing are Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata, where you can hopefully watch and photograph the flamingos.

If you wish to include this extra, please add €10 per person to the price above.

Complimentary transport to / from San José to these locations can be provided as a courtesy but it does NOT form part of the experience and as so, wouldn’t be covered by our normal insurances. Ruta del Desierto / Route of the Desert (approx. 6 hours)
The Tabernas desert is home of many of the great Spaghetti Westerns including the seminal films (movies) of Sergio Leone. It is also Europe’s ONLY true desert!

ruta-desierto

We will meet at one of the many access points to the rambla not far from the Fort Bravo theme park. Much of this route will be along the rambla where we can see some unique geological features, outstanding flora and fauna, if we are lucky and some of the actual locations of films (movies) like Lawrence of Arabia and Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy. When the sun sets here, you could easily be forgiven for thinking you are in some far away exotic place…. oh wait, you ARE! Some truly fantastic photo opportunities to be had in the Tabernas desert and a must for film fanatics.

This is a very beautiful but remote location and we need to stress that there are NO facilities along this route. You’d be amazed how many people look for the toilets or somewhere to buy water or snacks!

The cost of this route based on a group of four is €45 per person, for a couple the price is €75 per person. We are happy to take individuals but you must appreciate then the price has to increase accordingly.

Complimentary transport to / from San José to these locations can be provided as a courtesy but it does NOT form part of the experience and as so, wouldn’t be covered by our normal insurances. Bespoke Itinerary
There is almost an infinite amount of beauty in Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata and around the province of Almería. It is impossible to list it all here but we can offer a “tailor-made” itinerary. After an initial consultation (by email, phone or in person), we will determine what types of landscape you would like to see; desert, mountains, beaches, traditional villages and also how long you’d like to spend on this experience. We can show you around several locations over a period of a few days or simply one or two locations in one day. This can include experiences previously offered by Tuco Tours and mentioned in our blog, see link above for details.

Why not combine your photography trip with a specific interest? For an additional cost, we are able to provide further guides that are specialists in bird watching, local history, geology and / or artisan activities.

The costs of these experiences vary depending on distances travelled, number of guides required, additional insurances required, number of people attending, number of days duration and necessity for overnight accommodation and meals. Generally we’d be looking to take out groups of three / four people but appreciate that there they may be couples or individuals that would prefer not to be part of a larger group. In this respect, we can offer a price accordingly.

As a rough guide, the price for a bespoke experience would be between €200 – 300 per day for a vehicle and photography guide and we can accommodate up to four people for this price. For travelling distances exceeding 100 km per day (averaged), you should also allow about €35 extra for fuel depending on current pump prices. All prices would be confirmed in writing after the brief consultation mentioned above and would be based on duration of experience, number of guides required and travelling distance. Prices do NOT include accommodation, food and airport transfers, see relevant FAQ in this respect.

Just to point out that we have actually had people call us up and ask to go somewhere special and not too far away and they’re not bothered about taking photographs and with as little information as this, we have provided a great day out for them!

If you have a particular disability or a medical condition that may affect your mobility, please mention this at the time of making your booking enquiry. Please note also that some locations have seasonal restrictions and we must be respectful of these and show respect and consideration for the environment at all times.

Please refer to our FAQs page for details on what to wear, the weather, etc…
